The Handmaid’s Tale has long since left its source material behind. Margaret Atwood’s award-winning 1985 book explored life in the dystopian Gilead, a nation where women have no rights, and handmaids are forced to bear children for high-ranking men. The adaptation’s first season hewed fairly closely to the book, but the second and third seasons went in their own direction, expanding the world and the rebellion against Gilead—which looks to be in full swing in the trailer for season four.
This full trailer repeats some footage from the first teaser, but shows more of the rebellion, and hints at the rest of the world taking greater action against the monstrosities of Gilead. Setting the whole thing to Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” is sure a choice, and one that underscores former handmaid June’s (Elisabeth Moss) position in the conflict. (“I’m gonna run this nothing town / Watch me make ’em bow”) Both trailers lean hard on Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) proclaiming, “She’s out there planning who knows what kind of atrocities to visit upon our righteous nation!” June is clearly a considerable threat.
The Handmaid’s Tale has already been renewed for a fifth season, so no matter what happens, this won’t be the last you see of this brutal world. The incoming season lands on Hulu on April 28th.
